November 26, 2007

I hope everyone is well rested from our long Thanksgiving weekend!
In sixth grade we returned to school to begin our unit on Ancient Rome, the last unit in our study of ancient history. We will soon be moving on to the Middle Ages which should provide an interesting change.

We have also been invited to participate in a photography contest through St. Anne's School. Anyone who is interested in submitting a photo should be getting started so that their submission can be in no later than December 14. This is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in photography. The winning photos will be displayed at the Quick Center for the Arts Walsh Art Gallery between January 4 and January 11.

We are coming to the end of our first true literature circles. Each student chose their own novel and was placed in a group with others reading the same book. Even I have been impressed by the lively discussions the groups have had!

In music, we have started to learn about the origin of Christmas carols and will spend the rest of our music classes before Christmas break practicing for the pageant.

Thanks to all students and parents for your continued support. I am looking forward to preparing
for the Christmas season with my wonderful class. Hopefully, we can look forward to Christmas
while continuing to love to learn.

Sincerely, Mrs. Bresky

This year is already flying by! So far, we have covered the Sumerians, Egyptians, and Indians of the ancient world. We will now be moving on to the Chinese, Romans, and Greeks.
I recently attended a workshop on teaching ancient Greece and through it we are invited to
participate in a photograhy contest. More details on that to come!

In vocabulary, we are learning how to integrate new words into our everyday speech- our Red Book of Vocabulary Extras is really filling up!

In reading, we just finished The Lightning Thief. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did! Next, we will spend some time working on our reading skills with poems and short stories. Then we will be on to another exciting novel.

Thank you to everyone that has purchased through Scholastic Books. With the class points that we received from our September and October orders, I have been able to acquire 5 6-book sets for future literature circles. The more books we can acquire for free from our points, the more we will be able to choose from when we are choosing our own books to read later in the year.

Thank you to all my students for your continued love of learning and thank you to all the parents for your continued support.

Sincerely, Mrs. Bresky
