THE WRITING PROCESS

Process Writing involves four major steps. They must be followed for each and every composition you write (this includes research papers and work in other classes!)

PREWRITING

Thinking and planning

Webbing

Clustering

Listing

Free Writing

Researching

Planning format (simple outlines or even more detailed ones)

DRAFTING

First draft (often called sloppy copy, but it doesn't have to be sloppy!)

Work your writing plan into sentences and paragraphs

If you use a computer, print out this copy whether or not you plan to use

it or the computer for revision.

REVISION and EVALUATION

Clarify your ideas by making sure they make sense and follow logically

Check your transitional words and expressions (unity)

Check for coherence - does the paper "stick" to the topic

Restructure your sentences, varying the style, eliminating words or

adding words that work better

Reorder ideas to make the paper flow more smoothly and clearly

Check over your vocabulary. Substitute fresh words for tired or overused ones.

PROOFREADING and PUBLISHING

Check capitalization, punctuation, spelling, etc. When in doubt - LOOK IT UP!

Share it with others.

For more detailed information on this process, please read carefully your textbook and take good notes as we proceed throughout the year.

NOTE: HAND IN TO THE TEACHER ALL WORK FROM PREWRITING TO PROOFREAD. PLACE THE FINAL DRAFT ON TOP AND THE OTHERS IN ORDER BENEATH IT.

FINAL DRAFT FORMAT:

Name is placed on the top line at the right (leave a margin!)

Skip a line and then center the title on the next line.

Skip a line and begin your writing.

Put one inch margins all around - left, right, top, and bottom

Do NOT write on the back of the paper!

If paper is longer than one page, place your last name - page number on the

top line of each additional page.
